You can start a text-based RPG campaign without preparing anything. No plot outline, no notes, no character sheet filled in beforehand. The preparation has already been done by someone else: another Author built a world, and you step into it. This guide shows the path from an empty screen to your first scene on Fabulator, and what to do in the first few minutes once you are there.

Step 1: Pick a world instead of writing one

On Fabulator, a campaign begins from a World Seed, a published world made by an Author. It holds the places, characters, factions and rules that the narrator will draw on. When you start from one, the platform copies it into a campaign of your own, so your story is yours and does not alter the original.

Open Discover and browse. Each card shows a thumbnail, a name and who made it. If you want a narrower list, the filter chips for RPG, Sci-Fi and Romance cut the catalog down by style. If a world sounds interesting, that is enough. You do not need to understand its lore to begin; learning it is part of the play.

Step 2: Press Play

Every card has its own Play action, so you can start without opening the detail page first. If you are not signed in, you will be taken through sign-up or login and returned to the same world afterwards. Starting creates your campaign from the seed.

Free accounts can clone a limited number of World Seeds at a time, so it is worth choosing one you want to try rather than starting five at once. You can always return to the catalog and choose again.

Step 3: Make a character in one step, or skip the form

Before your first turn, you create the character you will play. There is a single-page form asking for a name, gender or pronouns, an appearance and an optional short backstory. Some worlds add a few extra questions of their own, and worlds with a mechanical ruleset may ask for a few character details.

If you would rather not fill anything in, use Randomize and Play. It generates a character and drops you into the story. This is the real no-prep route: one click, and the narrator has a name and appearance to work with.

You can write as much or as little as you like. A name and a single line of appearance is enough to start.

Step 4: Let the opening scene set the stage

Once you are in, the narrator opens the scene. A world can mark candidate starting places, so your campaign begins somewhere the Author chose rather than somewhere improvised. Read the opening, then read the location line above the story, which tells you where you are in the world.

You do not have to respond cleverly. A first action can be small:

  • Look around, or ask what you can see.
  • Speak to the nearest person.
  • Ask what you know about where you are.

Each of these gives the narrator something to build on, and you learn the world by seeing how it answers.

Step 5: Say what you want, in plain words

Text RPGs do not need special syntax. Describe what your character does, in whatever voice feels natural. "I ask the ferryman where the boat is going" works. So does "I try the locked door". The platform interprets your input, works out what the action means for the world, checks the proposed changes against the world's rules, and then the narrator writes the result.

If you are unsure what to do, say that. Asking what options a situation offers is a legitimate move, and the narrator can respond with what your character would notice.

Step 6: Use undo and retry freely

You are not locked into a first attempt. The story panel has Undo and Retry controls. If a turn did not go the way you intended, undo it or ask for it to be run again. This makes the early minutes a lower-stakes space to experiment, which is what you want when you have not prepared anything.

What to expect from the first session

Expect the first few turns to be about orientation. You will learn the setting, meet one or two characters and find out what the world wants from you. The story's shape emerges from your choices and the Author's setup, not from a script you have to follow.

A few things help the session go well:

  • Keep early actions concrete and short. Long plans can wait.
  • Follow whatever you find interesting. There is no wrong thread.
  • Note names the narrator uses. You can use them later to find your way back.
  • Stop whenever you like. Your campaign is saved, and you can return to it from your own list.

When you are ready for more

Once the first session has settled, you can look at how your campaign tracks its facts and memories, adjust how much action or romance the story leans toward, and try other worlds. None of that is needed to begin.

If you have a few minutes, open Discover, pick a world that catches your eye and press Play. Everything else can be worked out from the first scene.
